What is team building? There is a lot of discussion about the difference between team building and team bonding. People like to point out that what is seen as team building events in the UK are actually team bonding and that the wrong word is used. Perhaps people in the UK do not like the word ‘bonding’ as it is seen as new age and not dry enough for business.

Team Building

Techincally team building is the act of taking an existing team and going through an ongoing process of building relationships between them. Social team bonding events may be one of the tools used, as will be personality profiling such as Belbin or MBTI.

Fun team building activities, of the type seen on this blog, are (if you want to be exact) social team bonding activities. The key to their success is that they are enjoyable shared experiences, and this is important not just in work teams but in all human relationships. Enjoyable shared experiences are one of the key drivers of friendship generally.

The work environment can be demanding. It is not always easy to build relationships in the environment people have at work. Therefore it is important to get away to a fresh environment and have a break together.

Camping team building event

Most team building events take place at hotels, but what if you want to do something really different?

The event in the photograph was for a London media company who came down to the New Forest for the weekend and stayed in authentic tipis. These are great fun and comfortably sleep six people.

A catering company was brought in and good food was laid on with a bar. The experience included a camp fire and our Hunt The New Forest Beast activity.

A wild eyed local visted the camp on the first night and told stories of a terrible beast which roamed those parts. Campers were advised not to stray too far from camp.

The next day the teams head off on a treasure hunt style event where the challenge is to track down The New Forest Beast. This event is great fun and really gives people the opportunity to have a memorable and enjoyable experience together.

The campsite that we use has proper toilets and showers, so it’s not too basic and while not the same as a hotel makes up for it in fun what you lose in luxury.

The New Forest is a great location for this event but there are campsites around the UK and even in London, so there are options everywhere.

The latest new fun team building activity is Dragon Dancing, created to mark and celebrate The Chinese New Year on February 14th. 2010 is the Year of The Tiger, a positive symbol which carries the motto “I win”.

Teams are given a large selection of materials and have two hours to make their own unique dragon and practice an entertaining dance before delivering it in front of a panel of judges.

They choose their music from an extensive selection including Kung Fu Fighting and The Prodigy’s Firestarter, which seems to be the most popular tune.
The panel of judges choose a winning team and they each get a bottle of Chinese rice wine.
This is a fun event which brings out the real characters in the group and promotes creativity and teamwork. In common with other paper projects groups have a mixed reaction when they hear what they will be doing. There is doubt and even, in some cases, horror. From the outset there are those who champion the cause, and it’s interesting to see them encouraging the unenthusiastic.
As the event progresses it becomes apparent that they are creating something really good and most of the doubters will be won over. The end is impressive, colourful and fun and by that time the group is on a high and the event ends with energy and delight with teams positively built.

Climbing over an inflatable obstacle course.

It's A Knockout

It’s a Knockout is a popular fun team building activity in the warmer months of the year. The group is divided into teams which compete on a range of challenges such as Human Table Football, Giant Inflatable Volleyball and a Giant Inflatable Obstacle Course.

This event works well for companies looking for an energetic, fun-filled experience. A professional, lively host can make the day and it can be combined with a barbecue and party to create a memorable event. It’s a Knockout is one of the big fun team building activities.

Team Building

A very happy and prosperous New Year from the team here at Fun Team Building Activities and Progressive Resources. It will be interesting to see what is popular in 2010. We predict that cooking and chocolate making will continue to be popular and also The Crystal Challenge, with our next generation of updated challanges and equipment. Photos will be coming in February.

We’re also backing Film Making as an activity because it really can be used to combine fun with useful business outcomes; films can be based on company values, business plans and pretty much any desired result. The teams also get a film to take away so they can watch their event again and again.

Our clients still want fun events but there has to be more to it than that. They need return on investment, now more than ever. We give this with authentic, effective activities without corny storylines and where the outcome feels natural rather than affected.
